How to use bear kaomoji

You can tell a bear kaomoji by its ears and its snout. The ears are ʕ and ʔ, two letters of the International Phonetic Alphabet whose curved tops sit on either side of the face, and the snout is ᴥ, which Unicode calls Latin letter ain: a small bump with a split under it, a nose and mouth seen from the front. Put two eyes beside it and you get ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ, the classic teddy bear.

Everything else works as in any kaomoji: っ after each ear makes arms for a hug in ʕっ•ᴥ•ʔっ, ♡ for eyes means love in ʕ♡ᴥ♡ʔ, ╥ draws the tears in ʕ ╥ᴥ╥ ʔ, and zzZ puts the bear to sleep. ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ is five characters, so it fits beside your name in a Discord nickname, and three or four still leave room in a TikTok bio, which allows 80. Faces made of ʕ ᴥ ʔ, dots and Japanese kana paste almost anywhere; ʕ ꈍᴥꈍʔ borrows a Yi syllable and ᕦʕ •ᴥ•ʔᕤ two Canadian syllabics, which an older phone may show as empty boxes.

Questions

What are ʕ and ʔ in a bear face?

Letters of the International Phonetic Alphabet. ʕ stands for a sound made deep in the throat, the one Arabic writes with the letter ain, and ʔ is the glottal stop, the catch in the middle of uh-oh. In a kaomoji only their shape matters: the curved tops look like a bear's round ears on either side of the face.

What is the ᴥ in ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ?

The snout. Unicode calls it Latin letter ain and files it among phonetic letters; its shape, a bump with a split under it, reads as a nose and a mouth. Dog faces borrow the same ᴥ for a muzzle, so it is the ears ʕ ʔ that make it a bear.

How do I make the bear hug, sleep or cry?

Keep the ears and the snout and change what is around them. っ after each ear gives it arms for a hug: ʕっ•ᴥ•ʔっ. Swap the eyes for ♡ and it falls in love: ʕ♡ᴥ♡ʔ. ╥ turns the eyes into tears: ʕ ╥ᴥ╥ ʔ. A trailing zzZ puts it to sleep: ʕ -ᴥ- ʔ zzZ.
