How to use triangle symbols
Most triangle symbols come from one Unicode block, Geometric Shapes: black ▲ and white △ triangles pointing up, down, left and right, each in a large and a small size, and the pointers ► ◄, a little longer than the rest. The corner triangles ◢ ◣ ◤ ◥ fill half of a square and join into zigzags. Mathematics adds its own: ∆ for a change in a value, ∇ (nabla) for a gradient, and ⊲ ⊳ for a normal subgroup.
In bios and display names, triangles do two jobs. They point — ▸ before a link, ▼ under a heading, the way a “read more” arrow does — and they decorate: ◬ ⋆ ◬ or ⟁ ⊹ ⟁ for a geometric, aesthetic look, ▲▼▲▼ rows as dividers. △ and ▽ are also the old alchemy signs for fire and water; 🜁 air and 🜃 earth are the same triangles with a line through them.
A few of them have a colour twin. ⚠︎ is the warning sign as text and ⚠️ the same sign as an emoji; ▶︎ and ◀︎ have the play buttons ▶️ ◀️. The text versions here carry an invisible selector, U+FE0E, that asks for the plain look, and the emoji group keeps the colour. Questions
What does the upside down triangle ▽ mean?
It depends on where you see it. In maths its look-alike ∇ is nabla, the operator for a gradient, and ∆ means a change in a value. In alchemy △ is fire and ▽ is water. In a bio or a chat ▼ is usually just a pointer — “look below” or “read more”.
How do I type a triangle on the keyboard?
There is no key for one. In Word, type the code and press Alt+X — 25B2 gives ▲, 25BC gives ▼; on a Mac, ⌥J gives ∆, and the Character Viewer (Control + Command + Space) finds the rest if you search for “triangle”. On a phone, copy one from this page, or save it as a text replacement with a shortcut.
Which triangle is the warning sign?
⚠, U+26A0. With the text selector, ⚠︎, it is an outline triangle with an exclamation mark that takes the colour of your text; ⚠️ is the yellow emoji. Both are on this page — the first in “Triangles with a sign inside”, the second among the emoji.
Is there a triangle with an eye symbol?
Not as one character. The closest text symbol is ◬, a triangle with a dot inside it. With emoji, people put the eye between two triangles — 🔺👁️🔺 — which is among the triangle combos above.
