Where bold text works

Instagram and TikTok: bio, name, captionsPaste a line from this page.
Instagram and TikTok: @usernameNot possible: a username takes only letters, numbers, periods and underscores.
Facebook, X, Threads, LinkedInPaste a line from this page into a post or a comment. Not into a Facebook profile name: Facebook’s name rules forbid symbols.
WhatsAppHas its own bold: an asterisk on each side, *like this*. Or paste a line from here.
TelegramHas its own bold: select the text and pick Bold in the formatting menu. Or paste a line from here.
DiscordHas its own bold in messages: two asterisks on each side, **like this**. For a display name, paste a line from here.
YouTube commentsHave their own bold: an asterisk on each side, *like this*.
Word, Google DocsUse the editor’s bold: Ctrl+B, or ⌘B on a Mac.

Checked on 3 November 2026: WhatsApp, Discord and YouTube against their help pages, Telegram against its bug tracker, Facebook names against its name rules. Where an app has its own bold, use it in messages: that text stays searchable, and screen readers read it as words.

How to use bold text

Each line is your text rebuilt from Unicode’s Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols: 𝗯 is not a b in a bold font but MATHEMATICAL SANS-SERIF BOLD SMALL B, a character of its own. That is why the bold survives the copy into places that have no bold button — an Instagram or TikTok bio, a name, a caption, a post on X. The first style, Bold, has no serifs, like the fonts Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn use, so it looks at home there; Bold Serif is the heavier, bookish one.

Unicode’s bold covers A–Z, a–z and 0–9 and stops there. There is no bold á, ñ, ç, ş or ı, so letters with accents stay as typed: corazón comes out as 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘇ó𝗻. A separate accent mark can be stacked on a bold letter, but Android phones show that pair as an empty box, so this page leaves such letters plain rather than broken. Not every style has digits: Bold, Bold Serif and Outline do; the italic, cursive and gothic styles don’t, so 2026 stays plain in them.

To an app, 𝗯 and b are different characters, and that has a cost. Screen readers spell bold letters out one by one or skip them; search inside an app usually will not match 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 to John; a hashtag in bold letters is a different tag from the plain one; and an email, a login or an @username needs plain letters. Bold one line — a name, a heading, the first line of a post — and keep the rest plain. Almost every bold letter also counts as two against a bio character limit.

Questions

How do I write in bold on Instagram or Facebook?

Type your text here, tap the style you like and paste it into an Instagram bio, name or caption, or into a Facebook post or comment. The bold travels with the text, so no bold button is needed. TikTok, X and LinkedIn take it the same way; only a Facebook profile name does not, because Facebook’s name rules forbid symbols.

Does bold work with accents, ñ or ç?

Only partly. Unicode has bold A–Z, a–z and 0–9 but no bold á, ñ, ç, ş or ế, so those letters stay as typed: corazón comes out as 𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗮𝘇ó𝗻. A bold letter with a separate accent mark on top shows as an empty box on Android phones, so this page leaves accented letters plain rather than broken.

Can I use bold in my Instagram or TikTok username?

No. The @username is an address and takes only letters, numbers, periods and underscores. Put the bold in your name or bio instead — those fields take it.

How do I make text bold in WhatsApp or Discord?

Both have their own bold. In WhatsApp, put an asterisk on each side: *like this*. In Discord, two: **like this**. That bold stays searchable, and screen readers read it as words, so use it in messages. For places without formatting, like a Discord display name or an Instagram bio, copy a line from this page.
