How to use small text symbols
Each line is your text rebuilt from separate Unicode characters, not a smaller font: ᵃ is MODIFIER LETTER SMALL A, ᴀ is LATIN LETTER SMALL CAPITAL A, ₐ is LATIN SUBSCRIPT SMALL LETTER A. Most were made for phonetic transcription, where ʀ is a uvular trill, not a small R. Because the shape lives in the characters, it survives the copy — the same trick the fancy text generator uses.
Unicode encoded the letters linguists needed, not a full small alphabet. Tiny has all 26, though its q is a look-alike, ᵠ: the real superscript q only arrived in 2021. Small Caps has 24: x has no small capital at all, and q stays plain. Subscript has 17. Capitals have no full superscript or subscript set, so they turn into the same small letters: Mia → ᵐⁱᵃ. Letters without a small form, accented ones included, stay as typed.
Every character here is from Unicode's basic set, so each counts as one against a bio character limit, where 𝓐 or 𐙚 count as two. The catches: the letters come from different blocks, so they may sit at slightly different heights; screen readers do not read them as words; and search and translation tools generally miss them, so keep the part people search for, like your name, in normal letters.
Questions
Why do some letters stay normal size?
Unicode has small versions of only some letters. Subscript has none for b, c, d, f, g and q (w, y and z arrived in September 2026, but most fonts do not draw them yet); Small Caps has no x, and q stays plain; accented letters have none at all. Those letters stay as typed — only Tiny borrows a look-alike, ᵠ, for q.
How do I make small text in Discord?
In a message, start the line with -# and a space: that is Discord's own subtext formatting, and it only works at the very start of a line. For a display name or a server nickname, copy a line from this page instead — those fields take characters like these. Your @username does not.
Can I use it for x² or a footnote?
Yes. ⁰–⁹ and ₀–₉ are complete sets, made for things like x² and H₂O in plain text. Tiny raises everything you type, so type just the number and paste it after the word. ¹ ² ³ sit in a different block from ⁴–⁹, carried over from an older character set, and may differ slightly in size or height. In Word or Google Docs, use the editor's own superscript button instead.
Can screen readers read small text?
Not as words. In a 2023 test, JAWS, NVDA and VoiceOver on iPhone read ² as “superscript two”, and NVDA read ˆ, a mark from the same block as several Tiny letters, by its code: “letter 2c6”. In tests with fancy bold letters, JAWS spells them out one by one, while NVDA, Narrator and VoiceOver may skip them. Keep anything important in normal letters.
