How to use glitch text

Each line is your text with marks from Unicode's Combining Diacritical Marks block piled onto every letter — the same kind of character that puts the accent on é. A mark has no width of its own: it attaches to the letter in front of it, and when there are several, Unicode stacks them outward — up from the top of the letter, down from the bottom. Stack enough and they climb into the line above. That is the look people call Zalgo, after a horror meme from 2004. Broken and Coin use a different trick: letters that come with a stroke built in, like ł and Ø, and currency signs such as ₵ and ₱.

Every mark is a separate character, and that is what each level costs. Light adds two to every letter, Glitch four or five, Zalgo about a dozen. On X each one counts toward the 280; count them the same way against a bio limit and a Zalgo word uses up an Instagram bio after about ten letters, a Discord display name after two. For a bio or a name, take Light, Broken or Coin, or glitch just one word. A repeated letter gets marks of its own, so the two l's in hello do not match. Type the same text again and you get the same result. Nothing here goes past 14 marks on a letter; Unicode's own guideline for safe processing stops at 30.

Glitch text goes where text goes — bios, display names, captions, comments, messages — but not into @usernames: TikTok and Discord allow only letters, numbers, underscores and periods there. The letters underneath stay ordinary letters, so the word is still in there, but screen readers handle the extra characters unevenly. Keep your name in plain letters and let one word around it glitch — it reads as a joke, not a wall.

Questions

Why does glitch text spill over the line above?

Marks take up no space of their own: Unicode stacks each new one further out from the letter, up or down, but the line keeps its normal height. A heavy stack is taller than the line, so it draws over the text above and below. That is the effect — if it covers something important, pick Light or Corrupted.

Will glitch text work on Discord, TikTok or Instagram?

In display names, bios, captions and messages, yes: Discord display names take special characters, up to 32 in all. Not in @usernames — TikTok and Discord allow only letters, numbers, underscores and periods there. Each mark is a character of its own, and X counts every one, so a name fills up fast: use Light, Broken or Coin there.

How do I turn glitch text back to normal?

Retype the word, or paste it into a tool that removes “combining marks”. Such a tool removes every mark, real accents too: é is stored as e plus a mark when text is decomposed, so café comes back as cafe. Broken and Coin are whole different characters and have to be retyped.

Can screen readers read glitch text?

The letters underneath are ordinary letters, but each mark is a separate character, and screen readers treat unusual characters unevenly. In tests with styled letters like 𝓪, JAWS spelled them out one by one, NVDA and VoiceOver on iPhone skipped them, and TalkBack read them as words. For letters with a stroke, a 2023 test had NVDA say “O stroke” for Ø where JAWS said just “O”. Keep your name and anything people need to understand in plain letters.
