How to use matcha symbols
There is no matcha character in Unicode, so matcha bios are built from three things. The first is Japanese: 抹茶 is the word matcha itself, written with the characters for “ground” and “tea”, and 茶 is tea on its own. The second is a leaf: ❦ ❧ ☙ are fleurons, the ivy-leaf ornaments of old printed books, and next to a cup they read as tea leaves. The third is the cup: 旦 is a Chinese character meaning “dawn”, but in Japanese kaomoji it has long stood for a teacup on a saucer — ( ˘ᵕ˘)っ旦.
The green comes from emoji. 🍵 🍃 🌿 💚 are what make a bio read as matcha, so most combos pair one of them with soft marks: 🍵 ⋆。˚ 🍃 after a name, or 🍓🍵🥛 for a strawberry matcha latte. For a coquette touch, add the bow 𐙚: 𐙚 🍵 ⋆˚. Everything outside the emoji rows is plain text and takes the colour of your font.
The Japanese words and the leaves work in display names, bios and Discord nicknames. The grass in 𖡼.𖤣𖥧 is made of letters of the Bamum script of Cameroon, the least supported marks on this page; anything your device cannot draw is hidden automatically.
Questions
Is there a matcha symbol?
Not as a text character. The closest is the emoji 🍵, a teacup without a handle, which comes out as a colour picture. In plain text people write the word in Japanese, 抹茶, or use a leaf ❦ and the kaomoji cup 旦 — all of them are on this page.
How do you write matcha in Japanese?
抹茶 — read “matcha”: 抹 means rubbed or ground, 茶 means tea. A strawberry matcha is いちご抹茶, a matcha latte 抹茶ラテ, and 宇治抹茶 is matcha from Uji, the tea town near Kyoto. Copy them from the first group; they paste anywhere you can type.
What emoji go with matcha?
🍵 🍃 🌿 💚 for the tea itself, 🍓 🥛 for strawberry matcha latte, 🍡 🌸 for a Japanese café look and 🧋 for an iced one. The combos group has them ready with sparkles and dots, such as 🍵 ⋆。˚ 🍃.
Can I use these in a TikTok or Instagram name?
In the display name and the bio, yes. The @handle takes only letters, numbers, dots and underscores on both apps, so the symbols go around your name, not into it.
