How to use kawaii symbols
Kawaii is Japanese for “cute”, and kawaii symbols come mostly from Japanese text. ツ is the katakana letter tsu, which happens to look like a smile; 〜 is the Japanese wave dash, used to stretch a word the way “sooo” does; ※ is the Japanese reference mark, and 〠 is a postal mark drawn as a face. Around them sit the marks every cute bio uses — ♡ ✿ ☆ ♪ — and the pieces kaomoji are built from: round eyes ◕, the bear nose ᴥ and the mouth ω.
The faces are the heart of it. Kawaii kaomoji such as (◕‿◕✿) or (◡‿◡✿) put round eyes and a small mouth inside brackets, with a flower ✿ or a sparkle ✧ next to them, and ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ is a bear. For a name, take a frame: ʕ Mia ʔ gives you bear ears, and 「♡ Mia ♡」 uses Japanese quotation marks. かわいい — the word itself, written in hiragana — works at the end of a bio. More faces are on the kaomoji page, and the rounder, softer cutecore look has its own set.
To type these yourself, a Japanese keyboard has many faces built in — the kaomoji keyboard guide shows where to find them. Everything above the emoji group is plain text and keeps the colour of your font; the emoji 🍡 🌸 🧸 come out in colour. Japanese characters work on almost every phone, and the few rare marks here, like ꈍ in ʕ ꈍᴥꈍʔ, are hidden from this page if your device cannot draw them.
Questions
What does kawaii mean?
Kawaii (かわいい) is the Japanese word for “cute”. Online it means a whole look: pastel colours, round faces like (◕‿◕✿), little animals such as ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ, flowers ✿ and hearts ♡.
What is the difference between kawaii and cutecore?
Kawaii is the original Japanese idea of cute, and its symbols are Japanese: ツ 〜 ※ and kaomoji like (◡‿◡✿). Cutecore is a newer style of the same mood that grew on TikTok, with its own faces >⩊<, sparkles ᵎᵎ and cup dividers ⏔⏔⏔ — that is the cutecore set.
How do I type kawaii faces on my keyboard?
Copying from this page is the quickest way. To type them yourself, add a Japanese keyboard: on iPhone the Kana keyboard has a list of faces, and on Android Gboard has a :-) tab. The kaomoji keyboard guide on this site walks through both.
Can I use kawaii symbols in my name?
In a TikTok or Instagram display name, a Discord nickname and a bio, yes — they are plain text. The @handle takes only letters, numbers, dots and underscores, and games limit how long a name can be, so for a game name pick one short mark like ツ or ♡.
