How to use cat kaomoji
A cat kaomoji needs two things: ears and a mouth. The ears are ^ ^ — two circumflex accents just outside the eyes, as in (=^・ω・^=) — and the mouth is ω, the Greek small letter omega, its double curve standing in for a cat's split lip. The eyes are free to change: Φ, the Greek capital phi, gives a wide stare in (ΦωΦ), ① makes them round in (=①ω①=), and ฅ, a letter of the Thai alphabet, turns into a raised paw in ฅ^•ﻌ•^ฅ.
Most faces here are five to nine characters long, so one fits beside your name in a Discord nickname, and two or three leave room in a TikTok bio, which allows 80. The shortest is ᓚᘏᗢ — three letters of Canadian syllabics that together draw a whole cat from the side. Faces made only of ^ ω = and brackets paste anywhere; the ones with rarer letters, such as ᓚᘏᗢ or (⁎˃ᆺ˂), may turn into empty boxes on an older phone, so check them where you paste.
Questions
Why is ω used as a cat's mouth?
It is the Greek small letter omega, borrowed only for its shape: the two bumps look like a cat's mouth seen from the front. That is why ω turns almost anything into a cat — (=ω=) is little more than whiskers and a mouth, and ( =ω=)..nyaa adds the Japanese meow.
Where do the ears go?
Outside the eyes and inside the whiskers: (=^・ω・^=) reads as whiskers, ear, eye, mouth, eye, ear, whiskers. Leave the ^ ^ out and the face still reads as a cat as long as the mouth is ω — (ΦωΦ) has no ears at all.
How do I make the cat cry or look angry?
Change the eyes and keep the rest. T or ; make it cry — (=TェT=) and (=;ェ;=), where ェ, a small katakana e, stands in for the mouth. ` and ´ slanting inwards make it cross: (=`ω´=).
