How to use check mark symbols
These are real Unicode characters, not a font trick. That matters more here than on most pages: the usual way to get a tick into Word is to insert the letter ü in the Wingdings font, which looks right until the text is pasted somewhere else, opened on a machine without that font, or saved as HTML — and then it is a plain ü again. Copy one of the marks above instead and it survives the trip, because the character itself is a check mark.
The same characters go into Excel, Google Docs and Sheets, into email subject lines, into spreadsheets used as checklists, and into any bio or username that takes text. In Excel they are ordinary text in a cell, so they sort and filter like text — worth knowing before you build a formula around one. They are not the interactive checkbox control; that is a form element and lives in the Developer tab.
One regional note. Tick and check mark are the same thing: British and Indian English say tick, American and Canadian English say check mark. The character is identical either way, so it does not matter which word brought you here. If a mark shows as an empty box on your screen, your device has no font covering it — everything visible on this page is safe to copy, since anything your device cannot draw is hidden automatically.

How do I insert a check mark in Word?
Copy one from this page and paste it. That is the whole procedure, and it beats the Wingdings route: inserting ü in Wingdings only looks like a tick while that font is applied, so the mark breaks when the text moves to another document, machine or format. A pasted Unicode character keeps its shape everywhere.
What is the difference between a tick and a check mark?
Only the name. Tick is British and Indian English, check mark is American and Canadian. Both mean ✓, the same Unicode character. Search engines treat the two phrasings as different queries, which is why both appear on this page.
Why does my check mark show up as an empty box?
The font on that device has no glyph for that character, so it draws a placeholder box instead. It is a display problem, not a broken copy — the character is intact underneath. Marks that your own device cannot render are hidden from this page automatically, so anything you can see here is safe to use.
Can I use these as checkboxes in a list?
Yes, and that is what ☐ ☑ ☒ are for — an empty box, a ticked box and a crossed box, so a plain-text list can show its own state. They are characters, not controls: nothing happens when you click one. For a box that actually toggles, you need a form element in your app or the Developer tab in Excel.
