How to use bracket symbols

Beyond the three pairs on your keyboard, Unicode has dozens: angle ⟨ ⟩, double square ⟦ ⟧, double angle ⟪ ⟫, tortoise shell 〔 〕, white square 〖 〗, and the Japanese quotation brackets 「 」 that fill the role our quotation marks do. All of them are single characters, so they paste anywhere text goes.

For a username or display name, the wide ones do the work: 「name」 or ⟦name⟧ reads as deliberate where (name) reads as an afterthought. Discord server channels use the same trick to group things visually — ⟨ general ⟩ — because Discord strips most formatting but leaves characters alone. Roblox is stricter and rejects some of these in display names, so test one at a time if a name will not save.

The full-width pairs — 「 」 and 【 】 among them — carry their own spacing built into the character, which is why they look airy next to Latin letters and why doubling them up with normal spaces usually looks wrong. The narrow ones ⟨ ⟩ ⌈ ⌉ sit tight to the text and work better inside a sentence.

Questions

Which brackets work in a Discord name?

Nearly all of them — Discord accepts plain Unicode in display names and channel names, which is why 「 」 and ⟦ ⟧ show up so often in servers. What it does not accept is formatting, so the effect has to come from the characters themselves.

What are 「 」 actually for?

They are the Japanese quotation marks, the equivalent of our “ ”. Outside Japanese they get used decoratively, mostly because they are wide, symmetrical and instantly recognisable — but if you are writing actual Japanese, that is their real job.

Why do some brackets look too far from the text?

Full-width characters like 「 」 and 【 】 include their own spacing, sized for Japanese text where every character occupies one square. Next to Latin letters that built-in space reads as a gap. Use the narrow pairs ⟨ ⟩ or ⌈ ⌉ when you need them tight.

Can I use these in a Roblox display name?

Some, not all. Roblox filters names more aggressively than Discord or Instagram and rejects certain characters without saying which. If a name is refused, remove one bracket pair at a time — it is almost always a single character rather than the whole idea.
