Windows: hold Alt and type the number on the numeric keypad with Num Lock on; a dash means there is no Alt code that works the same on every Windows. Word for Windows: type the code, then press Alt+X. Mac, U.S. keyboard layout: ⌥ is Option and ⇧ is Shift; for the rest, Control+Command+Space opens the Character Viewer. HTML: paste the code into the page source.

How to use circle symbols

Circles are scattered across Unicode. The plain ones — ● ○ ◯ ◉ ◎ — sit in Geometric Shapes next to the squares and triangles; the bullet • is punctuation; ∘ ⊕ ⊗ ⊘ are mathematical operators; and the circled numbers ① ② ③ and letters Ⓐ ⓑ are enclosed characters, made for lists and labels. Being characters, not pictures, they take the colour and size of the text around them — only the emoji 🔴 🟢 🔵 come in colour.

Circled numbers run from ⓪ to ㊿. Past 50 there are only ㉍ ㉎ ㉏, the tens 60, 70 and 80 on a black square, and no single character for a circled 51 or 100. Filled ones ❶ ❷ ❸ go up to ⓴, double-circled ⓵ ⓶ ⓷ up to ⓾. In a bio or a caption they number a list — ① step one, ② step two — and for game names people look for the circled Chinese characters ㊎ ㊍ ㊣. To write a whole name in circles, like Ⓛⓤⓝⓐ, use the Bubble style of the fancy text generator.

Some circles look alike but are different characters: ○ is a white circle, ◯ a large one, 〇 the ideographic zero of Chinese and Japanese, ⭘ a heavy ring; ∅ is the empty set and ⌀ the diameter sign from technical drawings. In a document, copy the one you mean rather than using the letter O. Triangles have their own page, triangle symbols.

Questions

Are there circled numbers above 50?

Only three. Circled numbers run from ⓪ to ㊿, and filled ones up to ⓴. Past 50, Unicode has just ㉍ ㉎ ㉏: 60, 70 and 80 on a black square. For any other number, write it in brackets, (51), or put a circle next to it.

How do I type a circle on the keyboard?

The bullet • has shortcuts: Alt+0149 on the numeric keypad in Windows and ⌥8 on a Mac. For any other circle, type its code in Word and press Alt+X — 25CF for ●, 25CB for ○ — or copy it from this page.

What is the circle with a line through it?

⊘ and ⦸ are slashed circles from maths, ∅ is the empty set, ⌀ is the diameter sign, and 🚫 is the “prohibited” emoji. At small sizes they look alike, but they are different characters — all of them are in the groups above.

How do I write my name in circled letters?

Copy the letters one by one from “Circled letters”, or type the name into the fancy text generator and pick the Bubble style: it turns Luna into Ⓛⓤⓝⓐ in one go. The filled circled letters 🅛🅤🅝🅐 are the Bubble Filled style.
